An unincorporated Round Lake man was arrested Monday, June 12, by Lake County Sheriff’s Office on charges of a sexual offense involving a juvenile.

Steve W. Spoerl, 53, of the 24700 block of West Townline Road in unincorporated Round Lake, was active on the social media site “Whisper,” according to detectives with the sheriff’s office. He used the site to start a conversation with the female victim.

Spoerl made arrangements to meet the girl near her home where he picked her up and drove her to a hotel in Waukegan. At the hotel, the suspect allegedly engaged in sexual conduct with her, according to detectives. Nude images of the girl were found in Spoerl’s cell phone, they said.

The suspect met the underage female online where he began a conversation with her, according to Lake County Sheriff’s detectives.

Spoerl was charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and three counts of child pornography. He is being held in the Lake County Jail on a $1-million bond with his court appearance set for Friday, June 16.

Commenting on the incident, Sheriff Mark Curran said, “It is essential parents monitor all social media applications on your children’s electronic devices. Online predators use these applications to prowl on children.”
