Lake County Curcuit Court Deputy Chief Judge Jay W. Ukena recently spoke at the Blue Kids Lake County kickoff for Child Abuse Awareness Month in the lobby of the Lake County Courthouse.
Judge Ukena pointed out that the effects of child abuse reverberate through many courtrooms in Lake County, and he called upon upon all of Lake County to remain focused on helping children.
April is Child Abuse Awareness Month and the Blue Kids Project is intended to focus attention on the issue by providing information and by placing eye-catching signs of a stylized blue silhouette of a child around the county.
Nicole Totoni, court services coordinator, moderated the event, and other speakers included State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim, Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor, and Lake County Regional Superintendent Roycealee Wood. During the event, Laura Notson, former director of the State’s Attorney’s Office Children’s Advocacy Center and co-founder of Blue Kids, was recognized for her lifetime contribution to a better Lake County. Numerous social service agencies, such as the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, Nicasa, Children’s Advocacy Center, Catholic Charities, One Hope United, A Safe Place, Zacharias Center, CYN, and Waukegan Township were on hand to provide information.
