Fisherman Rescued After Ice Gives Way on Channel Lake

As a couple of men were out ice fishing on the Chain ‘O Lakes in unincorporated Antioch today, the ice gave way and they fell in the water.

Lake County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Channel Lake Sunday, Jan. 22 at approximately 3:3o p.m. for a report of two people who fell through the ice.

According to authorities, when the men were returning to the shore after fishing, both fell through the ice approximately 100 yards from the shore.  One of the men was able to pull himself out of the water and after being submerged for approximately 30 minutes. The other man was rescued from the water by members of the Antioch Fire Department.

One of the men was transported to St. Catherine’s Medical Center in Kenosha, while the other was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.  Both suffered non life-threatening injuries.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office reminds the community to take extra precautions with the current warmer temperatures, as ice can be dangerously thin.
