Walgreens Boots Alliance has been honored by the United Nations Foundation for its commitment to the “Get a Shot. Give a Shot” initiative which provides life-saving vaccines to children in developing countries.
The foundation gave the company its Global Leadership Award at a dinner in New York on Oct. 18. Omella Barra, co-chief operating officer, received the award for the company.
“Walgreens Boots Alliance is committed to helping people around the world lead happier, healthier lives and this program is an important part of our mission,” she said.
Get a Shot. Give a Shot” is a program in which Walgreens will give a life-saving vaccine to a needy child around the world, for every flu shot or vaccine any of its customers receive.
Kathy Calvin, UN foundation president and chief executive officer, lauded the company for its achievements to protect children around the world from deadly or debilitating diseases. Worldwide, one of five children lacks access to life-saving immunization, according to the foundation. A child in a developing country dies every 20 second from a vaccine-preventable disease.
Walgreens Boots Alliance was created in 2014 through the merger of Deerfield-based Walgreen Co. and Alliance Boots with 13,100 stores in 11 countries.
